Diabetes is one of the global health emergencies of 21st century. Apart from significant morbidity involving multiple organs of the body, globally it kills one patient every 6 seconds. As per “International Diabetes Federation (IDF) 7th Diabetes atlas” tuberculosis, Malaria and HIV/AIDS together killed about 3.6 million people globally in 2015 while diabetes alone killed 5 million people. Globally 415 million people are affected with diabetes which will rise to about 642 million by 2040. India is home of about 70 million diabetic people which is 2nd largest in the world after China and it will rise to about 123 million by 2040. There are currently over 199 million women living with diabetes and this total is projected to increase to 313 million by 2040. Diabetes is the ninth leading cause of death in women globally, causing 2.1 million deaths each year. Two out of every five women with diabetes are of reproductive age, accounting for over 60 million women worldwide. Women with diabetes have more difficulty conceiving and may have poor pregnancy outcomes. Globally one in seven births is affected by gestational diabetes (GDM); in South-East Asia one in four births is affected by GDM.
World Diabetes Day (WDD) will be observed globally on 14th November 2017. The Theme of WDD 2017 is Women and Diabetes, with the slogan “Our right to a healthy future”.
“Integrated Diabetes and Gestational Diabetes Clinic (IDGDC)” a joint venture of “IQ City Medical College & Narayana Hospital” and Diabetes Awareness & You (DAY-a social welfare organization) is also observing WDD. On this occasion IDGDC will run free diabetes screening camp during diabetes awareness week (14th-21st November 2017) for all women who will visit IQ City Medical College and Hospital. During this period IDGDC will also provide gestational diabetes screening at a subsidised rate of only Rs-100 with FREE Doctor & Diabetes Educator. With an aim to equip about 200 young would be doctors with the latest diabetes diagnostic and therapeutic knowledge, IDGDC has organised “Basics of Diabetes & Insulin Technique Workshop” on 13.11.2017. These trained doctors will be the torch bearer of diabetes care in resource poor rural areas.
